But What Do You DO All Day?

I admit it.  I'm lazy.

Now I'm not always lazy.  People who know me know that my house is always pretty presentable.

My husband and I very seldom have to turn our underwear inside out because I neglected to do laundry.

My yard is pretty well-tended.  And I am a fairly decent cook.  I also make time for quality time with my dogs.  They are both walked, played with, bathed and brushed regularly.

Sheets are changed on all four beds once a week.  I keep up on current events, have lunch with friends, and follow my favorite sports teams.

On a more personal level, I have my hair cut once a month and get manicures and pedicures weekly.  I enjoy long bubble baths daily.  I also do a little shopping from time to time.  And I attend mass regularly.  (Okay, that's a lie.  I just wanted to see if you were paying attention.)

I take care of my husband's clothing.  I plan meals.  I rearrange furniture.  I visit with neighbors.  I talk on the phone, listen to music,  and spend time on the internet.  I peruse ebay for "deals" and craig's list for "chance encounters".

Late afternoons, I tend to sit in my kitchen with my feet propped up and either watch television or read.  This gives me an hour or two of "me" time every day. Sometimes I watch CNN, but sometimes I watch reality shows.  I seldom concentrate on either, but it's background noise and I find it relaxes me.

When Alex gets home from work, it's back to the treadmill.  Feed the dogs.  Walk the dogs.  Fix dinner, do dishes, discuss our respective days.

Alex asked me one time "Why don't you go and work with deaf kids or something?"  (Yes, from the film "Scarface".)

No wonder I feel tired.

  1. I love the colour of your toenail polish! And they pop so beautifully in contrast to your sweet little peep-toe shoes. It sounds like your days are full and fullfilling already. Maybe Alex could help the deaf kids in his spare time :-)

  2. You and I lead similar lives. Strangely, now that I rarely I work outside the home the more I feel that there aren't enough hours in the day. Between the house, yard, pets, grandkids, exercise, friends, clubs, shopping etc. I always have something to do.

  3. For someone who claims to be lazy, you seem to keep busy at one thing or another except for a couple hours of TV, and everyone needs some "me time". My TV time often includes computer time and fixing dinner. We gals can multitask.

  4. I spent 45 years of my life working outside of the home. (I worked inside the home too, of course.) I used to work a 40 hour work week, commuted 3 hours per day, kept the house and made meals, did laundry, and had an active social life. I have no idea how I did that, Linda. But in the last 10 years or so, I've given in to putting me up at the top of the list. And that's not a bad thing.

  5. Being a homemaker is not a bad gig after the kids are gone. But it's still work. I think we've earned some down time and time for ourselves, Cheryl.

  6. I love "hussy red" too, Nicky! My days are fairly full with stuff, and I even get paid "wife money". Alex can go work with deaf kid in his spare time. I'll go have a pedicure while he tutors.

  7. You do a lot more than me! Just changing my bed about does me in for the day.

Linda, it's great that you can enjoy life and not feel guilty. You worked hard, you earned your leisure, and you do what needs to be done. I feel as though I burned myself out for a long time with the job I had, and now I'm nurturing parts of me that were ignored during that time. But I do have a project that sort of equates to working with deaf kids, and I'm trying to work up the energy and enthusiasm I need. I tell myself it will happen soon.

  9. Good for you, Nancy! I really thought about doing some volunteer work, but decided I'd rather just do consulting for some of my old clients. I did that for a couple of years, but even though I liked the money, the work really didn't stimulate me that much. At 67, I can slow down and not apologize.

  12. I find that officially being deemed as doing nothing makes no sense cause I am busier now then I ever was when I had 9-5. Then again, there is always mass.

  13. It works okay for me, Kato! I don't do "clubs" or that sort of thing, but I keep in motion. Not the same as keeping busy, but it's okay.

  14. Mass is a good way to use up an hour. Unfortunately, I'd have to give up my bubble bath so I don't think it's a fair trade off. Know what I mean?

  15. And we love you right back, Lee! I knew you'd understand!

  16. There's so much to do and never enough hours to do it! People who are bored from not working obviously didn't do anything in the first place! There's too much to do to ever get bored! You sound pretty busy to me, not lazy!

  17. I detest house work, there's always something or the other to do! Phew! I have to pull myself off the load of work that never seems to get over. But men have it better!

    Joy always,
    Susan

  18. If you're lazy than I must be comatose. Holy crap, sister. I'm tired just reading about all you do. No wonder you fell flat on your face. You were probably exhausted. I say put those feet up and keep 'em up. The only lifting you need to do is with a glass of wine. Hugs!

  19. Sounds like a full day to me. I was in my yard for near 6 hours a coupla days ago, and I was actually working in it. Now, that doesn't happen often 'cause I'm so not the outdoorsy type but surely, I can't be an embarrassment to the neighborhood.

Lazy is better than Crazy, I like to say! of course, that applies to horses I'm riding. but there is NOTHING wrong with being lazy, which you aren't anyway, by the way.

Working in the home is anything but lazy!

So sorry to hear you have broken your hand! How did that happen? Hope it heals very soon... might be a good excuse though to keep off the housework for a while... ;-)

  22. HA HA I laughed outloud at going to Mass every day! I wondered because I do that too and I've NEVER seen you there! ;)

  23. I love the way you spend your time - and quite frankly - even though I don't have a "real job" either - I find there aren't enough hours to take care of all the daily things either!

  29. I'm with Meleah. It doesn't matter that I don't have a full-time job, I still run out of time every day to get stuff done. Crap! That reminds me, I gotta go pay bills.

  30. Those legs don't look like they do any work to me. They look like the Lady of the Manor's - used to pampering and helps, deservedly of course :)

  31. You should get a boring day job with no computer access so you can think of comedy all day long and then blog when you come home.

Wait, that's what I do. Nevermind.
