Amazing Grace Used To Be My Middle Name

This is a photo of my new Summit refrigerator.  It's pretty sleek.  I like it and I'm very glad it's now gracing my kitchen.

I had some trepidation over this purchase as I did not receive the refrigerator until 25 days after I had ordered and paid for it.

I made numerous attempts to find out where it was, had it shipped, etc., but was told over and over again, "It's gonna ship tomorrow."  Three times I tried to cancel the order in frustration.  The seller ignored my cancellation request and told me, "It's gonna ship tomorrow."

I think having nerve damage in my hand has caused me to have less patience than I used to have.  I was seriously angry over this delay, but then a lot of things have been delayed a bit recently.

I ordered a gorgeous kitchen island from Williams Sonoma.  I got an email yesterday saying the island had been delayed and would not ship until the week of December 2nd.  I was expecting it in mid-October.

My contractor told us last week that he couldn't start work on our projects until October.  We are putting in new granite counter-tops in the kitchen and having it repainted.  I've chosen a lovely paint color called "Chai Latte" for the walls, and "Princess Ivory" for the trim and cabinets.  I'm sick of the avocado walls.  I'm trying to figure out how to get a copper back-splash but I'm not really well versed on what that entails.  Baby steps.

Fortunately, we did get hardwood floors put in the kitchen a couple of weeks ago, but so far, that's the only thing that has happened on time.

We are scheduled to have the exterior of our house painted on October 1st.  (The painting contractor has already told us, that's going to be "put out a bit" because of over-scheduling on his part.)  Uh huh.  Well, what else can go wrong?

Meanwhile, hand is still giving me fits.  I do think the physical therapy thing will help, but I'm beginning to worry that I'll never go back to "normal".  The pain is really strange and it's getting really boring.  I have sharp pains that make me squeal when I move my fingers, sudden itching that feels like my hand is stuck in some poison oak, and hot throbbing.  All that sounds a bit sexy I know, but it's really not.

Maybe I'll start taking those morphine milkshakes after all.

  1. Ah man, I'm holding back tears after reading about your hand. Dammit, Linda, I'd really hoped that your healing would go more smoothly and the pain would diminish quickly. I know that my patience is not up to snuff when I'm dealing with pain and constant discomfort because my brain feels like it's full of broken glass that gets in the way of thinking clearly and behaving politely. Hang tough, take care of yourself, and don't worry about the timing of all those projects. They'll get done just maybe not quite when you'd hoped.

Sexy fridge and gorgeous hardwood floors.

So sorry to hear about your hand though.

  3. Hah! We're also getting new flooring in one of the baths, a new toilet and sink, and a hood for our range. That lottery money will really come in handy.

  4. Thanks Fi! I was hoping for some really quick improvement to the hand, but it's taking a while.

  5. I'm usually fairly tolerant of other people's schedules, but I'm really letting things annoy me. I'm sure my ill-temper is connected to having this damn crippled hand.

  6. Oh Linda, I'm so sorry to hear your hand is still hurting so badly. :( Pain makes us impatient, and I can't imagine how frustrating all the delays must be. But just think about how awesome everything's going to look once it's all done!

  7. I hate hearing that you're in pain. Still, those are some beautiful floors :)

  8. Thanks Mike! I'm just whining but it really does suck! I love my new floors!

  9. I think it really will be nice, Ziva. There are no really huge (structural) changes but all the other stuff should be great!

  10. I feel your kitchen pain, Linda. Wish I could do something for your hand pain, though... I don't like it when lovely people feel pain. My recent foray into remodeling started with my toilet having to be shipped 5 times because it kept arriving broken... arggghhh! All your delays make me not feel so bad that it's taken us 3 months to do our bathroom on our own.

  11. Hang in there. I lived with back pain for three years but it is starting to get better. But trust your instincts too. If you think there's something unusual with your pain pursue getting it thoroughly checked out. It took a long time (over 10 years) for me to find the underlying cause of muscle pain that I had. Many doctors told me I was crazy -- one even prescribe Paxil. Then I found a doctor who was educated on my unusual condition (Hypermobility Syndrome) and knowledgeable treatment has made all the difference.

  12. I guess in California it's always a spring revival. : )

That's frustrating. It would have been perfect for the frustration photo prompt. : ) It sucks when you don't have control over a situation. Do what you can in the meantime.

The physical therapy will definitely help. It's torture at first, but it's helpful torture. I did PT when I had sciatica.

How do the wood floors hold up with the dogs? We're thinking of putting them in?

  13. Most of our house has hardwood floors. The dogs are actually harder on carpet than on the floors. I hesitated over the hardwood in the kitchen because of water, but it's been pretty easy to just mop up spills. I did move the pups' water bowls to a room with tiles though!

  14. I am so glad somebody figured out what was going on with you and your back! Having a diagnosis and a treatment plan gives you hope! I'm just whining but my hand is a little better. It still hurts, but it's a little more flexible from the exercises.

  15. All of your projects sound wonderful. I always hate the mess when renovations are going on but so enjoy the result.

You will love the granite. I replaced my counters several years ago and am still loving them.

As for hardwoods in the kitchen. Our main floor is all hardwoods, kitchen included. I have never had any problems with upkeep. They are so easy.

  16. That toilet thing sounds like a nightmare! But it's all working now! We have quite a bit of stuff coming up, but I just want to get it done!

  17. Yeah, Cheryl, our house is a Victorian and 130 years old. The floors are in amazing shape for the most part. They were covered in ugly carpet when we moved in and I was thrilled to see what was under that carpet. We had them refinished and they are glorious.

Before you try the morphine, try accupuncture. not saying it will work, not saying it won't work, but it might, and it would be better than morphine! (I hate morphine).

  19. Morphine makes me feel like I have aliens crawling around under my skin and not in a good way, Merri! It's getting better but I'm impatient!

  20. At least the refrigerator is finally there. Your floors are gorgeous and the rest will all come together in time. Taking care of yourself is the first priority, though I know how frustrating it is to be put off.

  21. I happen to LOVE your new fridge and hooray for hardwood floors. But, I'm sorry for all of the delays your having though. Remodeling is challenging enough even when things arrive on time!

And I can totally relate to the nerve damage pain. I get those sharp stubby pains and total numbness in my left hand from ulnar neuropathy - but I am NOT ready to have the surgery yet. PT wasn't helpful at all for me - but the medication I take a night helps, at least sometimes.

  22. Hey Linda, bummer about the delays, but those will pass soon enough. Deep breath, beautiful. Best thoughts are with you and your hand; I hope the physio and meds will get it back into shape quickly. Pervasive pain gets wearying very quickly, as you know all too well. Take care, Indigo x

  23. Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. I've never experienced "nerve pain" and it's a trip. I feel like I have electrical currents running wild in my hand. Weird. It'll get better. I hope.

  24. I love the fridge too, Meleah! I feel like an idiot even complaining about this hand knowing all the health nonsense you deal with day in and day out. PT is helping with range of motion, and it's getting less painful now.

  25. Thanks, Renee! I'm really impatient over scheduling. I want it all done NOW! Oy vey!

  26. You'll be all right. October starts tomorrow. Now, December for the island is a real long time. I never heard of such a thing.

You must've ordered that fridge from Sears. They're famous for giving folk the runaround. But if you didn't, you know now.

Strange...I seem to have missed a lot of your posts. Just looked back and learned about your nasty fall. It's awful to fall on one's face, and even worse to have pain that lasts as long as yours has. I really hope PT gets your hand working nicely again. Also, I love that Ziva flew all the way from Finland to meet you. I visit her blog once in a while, especially when other friends are entering the photo challenges. And finally, all those people who are late with your home improvement projects should see your unhappy face to understand the risks they are taking! Here's hoping that when things do arrive, they are even more wonderful than you imagined. You deserve that much.

  28. Thanks Nancy! My hand is getting better, but it's a slow and painful process. That fall left me shell shocked honestly! Ziva a fantastic in cyberspace and in person. I love her.

  29. Oh good! I'm THRILLED PT is working for you! YAY!

  30. Love the new fridge. It looks like it will hold a lot of stuff. Mine isn't small, but I have stuff stacked on top of stuff. It is old, though (1992).

  31. It's a bit smaller that the one we had before, but it's large enough. The huge side by side was too big for the wall. With only two of us, we really didn't need the larger capacity.
